βNEUTRAL PRIVATE STANDARD ON CARBON EMISSIONS
Voluntary certification for Carbon Footprint and Carbon Offset of products and processes, and Carbon Credits trade assessment.
Bios is an independent control and certification body in organic production and Farm Assurance that verifies and certifies that operators involved in specific production standards act according to the recognized regulations and guidelines.
Since 2004 Bios is operating in the voluntary market of the “Carbon Economy”.
Companies and organizations that want their activity to be respectful of the “green guidelines“ for environment protection find in Bios a partner that guarantees an independent and reliable certification.
The path to obtain this certification depends on the aim of the company that wants to undergo this standard such as:
Company Carbon Footprint: It is a calculation on direct emissions due to fossil fuel and non-renewable energy sources use. This can be done through regulation ISO 14064-1 and PAS 2050, eventually verified and certified by ISO 14064-3.
Product Carbon Footprint: This is made through the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) for each process involved in product manufacturing. This will determine all the environmental impacts of the product, Carbon Footprint included (see ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14067)
Start an emission reduction project: Minimizing the energy losses can be a profitable process that can be certified and claimed in advertising.
Partial or total offsetting: obtained by reducing and/or buying carbon credits the company can choose to declare a partial or total status of Carbon Neutrality. Credits can be generated in third countries through forestry/agricultural projects managed by local authorities or others. The credits deriving from such practices achieve a trade value as equivalent CO2 (CO2e), according to the trend of the voluntary market.
Communicate the achieved carbon Neutrality: companies can choose many ways to declare their environmental status based on verified, guaranteed and real scientific data, in order not to get fined of Green Washing. The not well known “Climate Declaration” and “Product Environment Declaration” are examples of communication based on LCA and ISO 14025. Statements well-supported by an independent validation third party (as Bios srl), could better do.
CO2e credits setting up: Bios is certifying credits deriving from agricultural practices. Peculiarly, a farm submitting to the organic system for at least 10 years, applying some simple practices leading to a rise of carbon absorption, is recognized to set up a number of CO2e credits equal to the quantity of CO2 that will be stocked into the soil in the following years. The credits generated by this practice will then be moved into the voluntary carbon market and be bought by companies aiming to reduce their emissions, bringing an additional income to the farm. The value of a credit will vary according to the market trend, like any other security in the Stock Exchange.
The above point can also be applied to other contests. Any natural spot included into a well managed project is shown to be able to create carbon credits.
After having validated the Company calculations and their reliability, Bios is granting the use of a recognizable label as shown:
